Threeways is ideally situated for
walkers visiting Keswick and the Northern Lake District. There
are a variety of walks suitable for all abilities from short flat
walks to full day hiking over the Cumbrian fells. Below are a few
suggested walks straight from the door of Threeways:
The old railway line to Threlkeld village - Walk
to Fitz Park (0.3 miles) and across to the Keswick Leisure Centre.
Go behind
the centre and past the Keswick Hotel. This path is the old railway
line which linked Cockermouth to Penrith which closed in 1972.
The path now provides a peaceful and relatively easy walk between
Keswick and Threlkeld village (approx 4 miles) following the river
Greta. The path is also a bridleway so ideal for a gentle bike
ride.
Latrigg (1207ft)
- Walk though Fitz Park and on to Brundholme Road, then to Spooney
Green Lane. Cross the A66 and
follow
the winding
path up to the top of Latrigg. The views of Keswick and Borrowdale
are spectacular and well worth the effort. To extend this walk
either walk down to meet up with the old railway line or continue
up Skiddaw (3054ft). The main path up Latrigg is also a bridleway
so again ideal for mountain biking.
Cat Bells (1480ft) - Walk to the boat landings
on Derwentwater and take one of the launches to Brandelhow. Walk
through the forest
and up Cat Bells to be greeted by magnificent views of Newlands
Valley, Borrowdale Valley, Keswick and Derwentwater. From here
you can either take a launch back to the boat landings or follow
the lake shore via Portinscale to Keswick. This walk can easily
be extended to incorporate High Spy and Maiden Moor but be prepared
for a full day's hike!
There are many other walks from Keswick and public transport is
excellent. You can take the Borrowdale bus from Booths supermarket
(100 yards) or take a launch to one of numerous jetties around
Derwentwater. |
